Import CSV and migration files

Use the import wizard to map generic CSV files or import PocketSmith and YNAB export files before saving transactions into your ledger.

What you need to map

At minimum, the import flow needs a date, a description, and a usable amount. Some CSVs use one signed amount column, while others split money in and money out across separate debit and credit columns.

PocketSmith and YNAB export files use a guided source mode instead of manual column mapping when Dolla recognises the export. Their source categories are carried into review so you can keep the structure you already built.

Uploading the file

Choose the import source first, then use the file picker or drag a file onto the upload area. Both upload paths start the same preview flow, so choose whichever is faster for the file you are reviewing.

Generic CSV accepts CSV files. PocketSmith and YNAB modes accept export files in CSV, TSV, or ZIP format. If you share a household, use the attribution control in the same upload panel before selecting the file.

Header detection

Dolla tries to infer the right mapping from the preview. If your source has unusual headers or no header row, review the suggestion carefully before saving.

Confidence checks

The wizard highlights whether the chosen mapping looks plausible. Treat that as a safety net, not as a guarantee that every row is correct.

Before you confirm

Use the preview step to correct anything obvious before saving. That includes category or account fixes, duplicate decisions, and marking rows as one-off when they should stay out of recurring budget and reporting views.

For PocketSmith and YNAB export-file imports, missing source categories are created only when you confirm the import. If you manually choose a different category in review, your manual choice wins for that row.

Status pills help you triage the preview: AI means an AI suggestion has chosen a category, Review means the row still needs a human category decision, and Reviewed means you manually chose a category in this import review.

If you change a category during review, Dolla keeps that row highlighted and can open a smart-rule prompt so you can save a repeatable rule immediately. You can apply the new rule to other matching rows in the same import before you confirm. After saving, every transaction can still be edited from the Transactions page.

Rows matched by an existing Smart Rule show a Matched pill. When the match came from a rule, click the pill to edit that rule without leaving the import review; saving the rule updates matching rows in the current unsaved preview.

Your first look

Your first successful save opens a one-time staged first look at the history added to your profile. Depending on how much usable history is available, Dolla shows transaction-backed findings, observed spending, or an account and cash-flow snapshot. It does not invent yearly trends when the imported period is too short.

The first look may also offer up to three category suggestions for repeated uncategorised spending. Adding one creates the category, moves the matching transactions, and saves a disclosed Smart Rule that you can edit or remove later. Description-based suggestions use cautious wording because CSV rows do not carry provider spending classifications.

The reveal is saved while it is being prepared, so refreshing or returning later does not create a second version. When findings are available, use the Insights link to continue into the full evidence-backed board. Select Take me to my dashboard to continue with the rest of the app. Either destination acknowledges the reveal so it does not interrupt later imports.

If preparation stalls, use Return to Data Management and retry the import.

For later saves, use the Undo import action in the saved-import banner if you need to remove the just-saved CSV, PocketSmith, or YNAB import. Undo is available only for the latest import shown in that banner.
