Budget overview

Understand how performance, rollovers, and categories fit together inside the budgeting workspace, and where Smart Rules lives.

Performance, Rollovers, and Categories are separate rows in the Track sidebar. Smart Rules has its own Track row, so category automation stays in its canonical Transactions workspace.

Performance

Use Performance when you want to see whether spending is covered, categorised, and staying inside the limits you have set.

Performance starts with a selected-period Against budget board. Column headings and a labelled dollar axis show how to read each row. Mint shows spending up to the category limit, and orange shows spending above it. Non-discretionary and Discretionary sections each include a subtotal, while spending without a limit appears under No budget set. Use Needs attention to focus on categories that are over, close to their limit, or missing a limit. Select a category name to apply it to the performance chart, or use its chevron to expand subcategories.

On a fresh visit, the named Last 3 months period covers the calendar month containing your newest transaction plus the two preceding months. An explicit URL range takes precedence over a range stored by Dashboard, Budget, or Reports; the stored range takes precedence over that default. Choose All time to remove date limits and keep that choice across those workspaces. Budget setup quality contains coverage, adherence, and categorisation checks for the selected period. Budget coverage is the share of spending in that period assigned to categories that have a budget limit.

Budget setup quality, the full-history chart, and the spreadsheet view appear directly below the selected-period board. The chart and spreadsheet keep showing the complete available month range for the selected member and one-off setting. The chart category selector is grouped by parent category so it matches the main dashboard and reports filter pattern, and the chart can exclude rollover categories from the all-categories view when sinking funds would distort ordinary month-to-month performance. Spend appears as monthly columns with the budget shown as a line. Chart columns open the matching month in Transactions, scoped to the selected chart category when one is active. The spreadsheet uses the same full historical month range and scrolls horizontally so older months remain available while category headings and summary columns stay aligned.

Rollovers

Use Rollovers when you want to review sinking-fund style categories that carry unused budget forward. Use the filter bar to change the period, custom dates, household member, or whether one-off transactions are excluded. Rollovers states the exact period being counted, charts the last 12 months of underspend or overspend against current monthly limits, and uses a grouped dropdown category filter to choose which rollover categories appear in that chart.

The chart also overlays cumulative budget and cumulative spend so you can compare the running budget baseline with actual spending over the same 12-month window. Each card breaks the balance into an equation: carried forward plus the selected period's budget minus spending over that period equals the amount left. Parent rollover cards include spending from their subcategories without duplicating those subcategories as separate rollover cards, and Open breakdown shows direct parent and subcategory rows with budget, spent, remaining, and transaction links for the selected period. Categories with no monthly limit show setup guidance, and exhausted funds are marked clearly so you can open matching transactions or edit the category.

Where Smart Rules lives

Smart Rules management lives in the Transactions workspace at /transactions?tab=rules, reachable from its own Track sidebar row and from Settings. Use it when imports or repeated merchants need consistent categorisation. Older /budget?tab=rules links still land there.
